Caucasian Queen Bee
£25 each for Queen Bee orders over 100
The Caucasian honey bee originates from the high valleys of the Central Caucasus, with Georgia as its central homeland. They are also found in eastern Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.
These bees have a silver-gray to dark brown colour and a longer tongue, allowing them to access a wider range of nectar sources. They are known for high propolis production, creating soft, sticky propolis that can make hive inspections challenging.
Caucasian bees stop brood production in the fall and overwinter well, making them ideal for colder climates. Because they come from a cold region, they can forage on colder days than other bee races.
They also show some resistance to European Foulbrood and have a low tendency to swarm. However, due to their high propolis production, they are not prolific honeycomb builders and tend to conserve their honey stores rather than overproduce.
