Varroa Sensitive Hygiene (VSH) – Buckfast bees exhibit VSH behavior, identifying and removing Varroa destructor-infested pupae, adding an extra layer of protection against parasitic mites.

The Buckfast Bee was created by Brother Adam (Karl Kehrle), born in 1898 in Germany.

In the early 20th century, British bee colonies were devastated by the tracheal mite (Acarapis woodi), and Brother Adam discovered that the surviving colonies were descendants of crosses between Italian bees and the native British black bee.

Continuing his research in the isolated Dartmoor mating station, he selectively bred queens and drones through controlled crosses. His travels across Europe, Africa, and Central Asia further enhanced the Buckfast bee by integrating different bee strains to improve resilience and productivity.

The result? The Buckfast bee, a highly resilient and productive strain, developed through years of selective breeding and global bee strain exploration.
